Glossary · WhatsApp Business API

Software talks on WhatsApp. The API is how.

The WhatsApp Business API is how software sends and receives WhatsApp messages on a business phone number, without a person typing them.

It has no screen of its own, so you reach it through a platform that has already connected to it.

Two things share a name. Only one is the API.

WhatsApp Business app

An app on a phone.

One person opens it and types.

WhatsApp Business API

A connection for software.

A platform you already use talks to it for you.

Both sit on a WhatsApp Business Account, or WABA: numbers, usernames, analytics, and Meta’s bill.

What you can send, and when.

Opt-in first, then three windows decide both the message and the Meta bill.

Within 24 hours of a customer message

What you can send

A free-form reply in your own words, or a utility template.

What Meta charges now

Free, including utility templates inside the window.

From 1 October 2026

Charged after 1,000 free service messages on that number each month, and in-window utility templates are charged too.

Meta bills your WABA, and your platform bills separately.
